Description From Owner:
  • Pop. 37,769. Town in Reg. Mun. of Durham on L. Ontario 80 km. E of Toronto. The town was formed in 1974 by the amalgamation of the Village of Newcastle, the Town of Bowmanville, the townships of Clarke and Darlington, and the police village of Orono.
  • Newcastle-upon- Tyne was the name of a port south of Brighton, named after the county seat of Northumberland in England.
  • It was to have been the capital of the newly created Newcastle District, but the idea was dropped after the sinking of the schooner Speedy off Presqu'ile. The Speedy was en route to the new capital for a murder trial.
  • The defendant, judge, jury, and many influential people of the time were lost in the wreck.
  • In 1868 Samuel Wilmot established one of the earliest full-scale fish hatcheries in North America on the banks of nearby Wilmot Cr.
  • Joseph E. Atkinson (1865-1948) began his publishing career as a teenager collecting outstanding debts here for the Port Hope Times. In 1899 he became editor and manager of the Toronto Evening Star, which he built into Canada's largest daily newspaper.
  • Massey-Ferguson, one of the world's largest manufacturers of farm machinery, started here as a modest family business in 1848.
  • Under three generations of enterprising Masseys the company prospered and in 1879 was relocated from Newcastle to larger premises in Toronto.
