- Pop. 201. In Scott T., Reg. Mun. of Durham, on C. Rd. 11,43 km NW of Whitby. The place was first known as Smith's Hollow for George Smith who settled in 1843.
- The post office opened as Sandford in 1862, likely honouring Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915), who came from Scotland in 1845 and settled in Peterborough.
- Of his many achievements he is likely best known as the invention of Standard Time, the universal system for reckoning time, adopted in 1884.
